Brett McCallum

Brett McCallum is the Executive Officer of the Pearl Producers Association (PPA).

PPA is the peak representative body for the pearling industry operating within the Western Australian pearl oyster fishery concentrating on the species “Pinctada maxima”.

Brett has been a Director of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation since 2009.

Brett was the Chief Executive of the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) for 14 years from 1987. WAFIC is the peak representative body for the commercial fishing and aquaculture industry in WA including catching, processing and retail sectors as well as pearls. WAFIC was established by the industry in 1968.

Brett held senior managerial positions with both the M.G. Kailis and Lombardo fishing companies from his start in the industry in 1980.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Western Australia.

Brett has been one of the WA delegates to the Australian Seafood Industry Council and has held a number of industry positions on state and federal government working groups and committees ranging from Biodiversity through to Quota Allocations.

He has held the position of Chairman of the Western Tuna and Billfish Fishery Management Advisory Committee and was a permanent advisor on several of the major WA fisheries management advisory committees.

Brett has also acted on several access allocation panels for Commonwealth Fisheries.

Brett enjoys the “people side” of the industry and the lack of formal hierarchy which allows decisions to be taken by the people at the coalface. Empowering those who have the investment to make informed decisions is one of the greatest outcomes he believes he can achieve.
